LAKE PLACID – Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Toronto climbed from fifth after the short dance to fourth overall on Sunday to conclude Skate America, the seventh stop on the ISU Grand Prix figure skating circuit.

Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani of the U.S. took the ice dance gold with 194.25 points with Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy second at 181.63 and Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov of Russia third at 176.53.

Gilles and Poirier followed at 166.54.

Poirier said the couple made changes to the free skate following their fourth place at the Grand Prix stop in Russia.

‘’We opened up the transitions making them less cumbersome so we can move and skate more freely.

Japan was 1-2 in women’s competition. Satoko Miyahara took the gold, Kaori Sakamoto the silver and Bradie Tennell of the U.S. was third.

Gabrielle Daleman of Newmarket, Ont., third after the short program, struggled in her free skate and placed sixth overall.

‘’Technically it didn’t go my way today,’’ said Daleman. ‘’That’s the way this sport goes and that’s the name of the game. I know what I need to work on and it is just a lot of repetition.’’

Canada ended the competition with one bronze medal earned by Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford in pairs on Saturday.

WARSAW – Liam Firus of North Vancouver earned his second medal this season on the ISU Challenger Series figure skating circuit on Sunday placing third in men’s competition at the Warsaw Cup.

Matteo Rizzo of Italy took the gold with 232.98 points followed by Stephane Walker of Switzerland at 204.48 and Firus, also third after the short program, with 200.71.

‘’It wasn’t the performance I wanted,’’ said Firus, also third at the U.S. International earlier this season. ‘’Still it’s a step in the right direction my goal is to be up there at the national championships and it’s all about pacing the season properly and figuring out what to tweak.’’

On Saturday, Emy Decelles of Baie-Comeau, Que., was sixth in women’s competition while in ice dancing Sarah Arnold of Waterloo, Ont., and Thomas Williams of Okotoks, Alta., were eighth and Molly Lanaghan of Scarborough, Ont., and Dmitre Razgulajevs of Ajax, Ont., were 10th.

Osmond wins bronze at Internationaux de France

GRENOBLE, France – Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond earned her second medal this season on the ISU Grand Prix circuit placing third in women’s singles Saturday at the Internationaux de France figure skating competition.

Alina Zagitova roared back from fifth place after the short program to win the gold and provide Russia a 1-2 finish with 213.80 points. Maria Sotskova was second at 208.78 and Osmond took third spot at 206.77.

Osmond topped the short program standings Friday and was ranked fourth for her free skate. She clinched a spot in next month’s Grand Prix Final. She won Skate Canada three weeks ago.

Her ‘Black Swan’ free routine was highlighted by five clean triple jumps, but she fell on a triple loop and singled an Axel.

“It wasn’t great,’’ said the 21-year-old from Marystown, N.L. ‘’I made a few mistakes, but overall I felt like I skated a strong program and the things that I’ve done, I’ve done at the best I could do. (In the Grand Prix Final) I mainly want to improve on my performances here, skate a clean short and to improve my long program, make it cleaner.”

In ice dancing, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Waterloo, Ont., delivered a strong free dance to ‘Je suis malade’, although Weaver had displaced her rib recently. They earned 176.97 points for fourth, edged off the podium by just 0.27 points. They were fifth after the short.

Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France took the gold with 201.98, Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the U.S. were second at 181.85 and Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin of Russia were third at 177.24.

Canada came close to a medal again in pairs as Lubov Ilyushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch of Toronto took fourth spot at 193.07, just 4.5 points back from third.

Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov of Russia won the gold with 218.20, Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres of France were second at 214.32 and Nicole Della Monica and Matteo Guarise of Italy were third at 197.59.

‘’Definitely some highlights for us in the free program,’’ said Moscovitch. ‘’It was an improvement from the last two times out this season. We’re still leaving a few points out there on the table and we want to clean those up moving forward.’’

Canada had no entries in men’s competition.

Canada’s Liam Firus in medal hunt at Warsaw Cup

WARSAW – Liam Firus of North Vancouver is in third place after Saturday’s men’s short program at the Warsaw Cup, part of the ISU’s Challenger Series figure skating circuit.

Matteo Rizzo of Italy stands first with 75.64 points, Stephane Walker of Switzerland is second at 68.92 and Firus follows at 66.58 out of 19 entries.

The ice dance and women’s events were completed on Saturday.

In women’s competition, Serafima Sakhanovich led Russia to a 1-2 finish. Emy Decelles of Baie-Comeau, Que., was sixth.

‘’I performed under my expectations,’’ said Decelles, 19. ‘’I’m pleased with my technical points but disappointed to pop two of my jumps. The big thing to work on is managing my emotions on the ice.’’

In ice dancing, Betina Popova and Sergey Mozgov of Russia earned the gold. Sarah Arnold of Waterloo, Ont., and Thomas Williams of Okotoks, Alta., were eighth and Molly Lanaghan of Scarborough, Ont., and Dmitre Razgulajevs of Ajax, Ont., were 10th.

Arnold returned to competition after a five-year retirement from the sport last season. She is in her second year with Williams.

‘’It was probably two of our strongest skates so far as team,’’ said Arnold about the event. ‘’We are really starting to gel. The practices have been going well and it was nice to finally duplicate what we’ve been doing in practice. For my part, I’m feeling more and more comfortable on the ice.’’

Lanaghan and Razgulajevs have been together for eight months.

‘’The performance was good,’’ said Razgulajevs. ‘’We wanted to please the crowd and we achieved that. We continued to work on our speed and power and that seemed to keep improving.’’

Competition ends Sunday.

Osmond leads after short program at Internationaux de France

GRENOBLE, France – Kaetlyn Osmond admitted she wasn’t overly thrilled with her performance but regardless she is in first place in women’s competition after Friday’s short program at the Internationaux de France figure skating competition.

It is the fifth stop on the ISU Grand Prix circuit.

Osmond, the 21-year-old from Marystown, N.L., earned 69.05 points with Maria Sotskoya of Russia second at 67.79 and Yuna Shiraiwa of Japan third at 66.05.

Vying for a second win this season on the circuit, she landed a triple flip-double toe and a triple Lutz, but the combination was shaky and she put her hand down on the Lutz. She recovered to complete a double Axel as well as level-four spins and footwork.

‘’Definitely there were a few things in my program I’m not too excited about,” said the world championship silver medallist. “I wish I would have done the combo and Lutz better, but overall I pushed through my whole program and I’m happy about where I am.’’

In pairs after the short, Lubov Ilyushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch of Toronto are in fourth spot with 66.36.

Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimior Morozov of Russia are first at 77.84, Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres of France second at 73.18 and Nicole Della Monica and Matteo Guarise of Italy third at 70.65.

‘’It’s definitely an improvement from the last time,’’ said Moscovitch. ‘’We skated together and pretty smooth. There are some little issues we gave up a lot of points on.’’

In ice dancing, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Waterloo, Ont., are fifth after the short dance less than two points from third place.

Canada has no entries in men’s competition.

All four free skates are on Saturday.
