Canadian Keegan Messing wins the bronze medal at Challenger Series event

ZAGREB – Keegan Messing of Sherwood Park, Alta., won the bronze medal Saturday in men’s competition at the Golden Spin of Zagreb figure skating event, part of the ISU’s Challenger Series.

Alexei Bychenko of Russia didn’t win either the short program or long program but wound up first overall for the gold with 228.08 points. Daniel Samohin of Israel, the leader after the short, took the silver at 226.12 and Messing hung on to the bronze at 223.30.

Messing, second after the short, finished only 0.28 points ahead of Alexander Petrov of Russia for third spot. Petrov posted the top free skate score to climb from 11th to fourth.

Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., was seventh and world junior championships silver medallist Nicolas Nadeau of Boisbriand, Que., was 11th.

Canadian Keegan Messing in second at Challenger Series event

ZAGREB – Keegan Messing of Sherwood Park, Alta., is in second place in men’s competition after Friday’s short program at the Golden Spin of Zagreb figure skating event, a stop on the ISU Challenger Series.

Daniel Samohin of Israel holds the lead with 82.35 points, Messing follows at 76.39 and Brendan Kerry of Australia is third at 76.36. The 24-year-old Messing is chasing a third career international win.

Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., stands sixth at 74.66 and world junior silver medallist Nicolas Nadeau of Boisbriand, Que., 13th.

Canada only has the three entries in men’s competition. The free skates are on Saturday.

Canadian skaters compete at the Golden Spin of Zagreb

OTTAWA, ON: Canada will send three entries to the 2016 Golden Spin of Zagreb from December 7-10, 2016 in Zagreb, Croatia. The event is part of the ISU’s Challenger Series. All three entries will be in the men’s discipline.

Nicolas Nadeau, 19, Boisbriand, Que., won silver at the 2016 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in March. Nadeau trains at École Excellence Rosemère and is coached by Yvan Desjardins.

Roman Sadovsky, 17, Vaughan, Ont., won silver and placed fifth at his two ISU Junior Grand Prix assignments in Estonia and Japan earlier this year. Sadovsky is coached by Brian Orser and Lee Barkell.

Keegan Messing, 24, Girdwood, Alaska, USA, placed fourth at the Skate Canada Autumn Classic International in September. The representative of Sherwood Park FSC is coached by Ralph Burghart in Anchorage, Alaska, USA.

André Bourgeois, Skate Canada NextGen Director, will be the Canadian team leader at the event. Jacqueline Wickett Warren of Manotick, Ont., will be the sole Canadian official at the event.

Canada’s Sadovsky in medal contention at ISU Junior Grand Prix

TALLIN, Estonia – Canada’s Roman Sadovsky heads in to Saturday’s men’s free skate with an opportunity to win Canada’s first medal this season in the ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit.

The 17-year-old from Vaughn, Ont., is in third spot after nearing his personal best score with 71.96 points. Vincent Zhou of the U.S. is first with 78.10 and Alexander Samarin of Russia second at 73.36.

Samuel Turcotte of Varennes, Que., is 11th.

The pairs free skate was held on Friday and Australians Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya and Harley Windsor took the gold medal.

Hannah Dawson of Johnstown, Ont., and Christian Reekie of Ottawa were ninth while Evelyn Walsh of London, Ont., and Trennt Michaud of Strathroy, Ont., were 11th.

In women’s competition, Russian skaters were 1-2 with Polina Tsurskaya taking the gold and Elizaveta Nugumanova the silver.

Emily Bausback of Vancouver was 13th.

In ice dancing after the short dance, Hannah Whitley of Barrie, Ont., and Elliott Graham of Angus, Ont., are fifth while Irina Galiyanova of Ajax, Ont., and Tommy Tang of Toronto are 12th.

Competition ends Saturday with the men’s free skate and the free dance.

Canadian ice dancers fourth at ISU Junior Grand Prix

YOKOHAMA, Japan – Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of Greenfield Park, Que., took fourth spot in ice dancing on Sunday to conclude the third stop on the ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit.

Rachel Parsons and Michael Parsons of the U.S. took the gold with 160.42 points, Anastasia Shpilevaya and Grigory Smirnov of Russia were second at 151.50 and Angelique Abachkina and Louis Thauron of France third at 148.76

Lajoie and Lagha, world junior team members last season, followed at 137.14, their best-ever international score.

“Both programs went very well,’’ said Lajoie. “We are happy with our result and fell we are on the right track.’’

Olivia Han of Waterloo, Ont., and Grayson Lochhead of Sweaburg, Ont., were eighth.

Japan swept the podium in women’s competition: Kaori Sakamoto took the gold, Marin Honda the silver and Mako Yamashita the bronze.

Fourteen-year-old Emily Bausback of Vancouver produced the eighth best free skate to climb from 13th after the short program to 10th overall in her Junior Grand Prix debut.

On Saturday, Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., landed his first career quadruple jump on international ice and was fifth. Eric Liu of Edmonton was 14th.

The fourth stop on the circuit is this upcoming weekend in Saranks, Russia.

Roman Sadovsky lands quad jump, places fifth at ISU Junior Grand Prix

YOKOHAMA, Japan – Roman Sadovksy of Vaughan, Ont., landed a quadruple jump for the first time on international ice and took fifth spot on Saturday in men’s competition at the third stop on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit in figure skating.

Juan Hwan Cha of South Korea was the winner with 239.47 points. Vincent Zhou of the U.S. was second at 226.39 and Alexey Erokhov of Russia third at 216.91. Sadovsky, fourth after the short program, finished with 211.56.

‘’I’m pretty happy with my free skate,’’ said Sadovsky, a double medallist last year on the circuit. ‘’Getting that quad jump was definitely a step up for me. For me to move up in the standings I need to land the triple Axel and I also hope to another one in the program as well. Little disappointed I missed it here today.’’

In ice dancing, Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of Greenfield Park, Que., are in fourth place after the short program just under four points from the podium position. Olivia Han of Waterloo, Ont., and Grayson Lochhead of Sweaburg, Ont., are eighth.

In Friday’s women’s short program 14-year-old Emily Bausback of Vancouver stands 13th in her junior Grand Prix debut.

Competition ends Sunday with the free dance and women’s free skate.

Canadian skaters continue on ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit in Japan

OTTAWA, ON: Canada will have five entries, for a total of seven skaters at the third ISU Junior Grand Prix of the season. The event takes place in Yokohama, Japan, from September 7-11, 2016. Canada will have one entry in ladies and two entries in men’s and ice dance. There will be no pair competition at the event.

Roman Sadovsky, 17, Vaughan, Ont., is one of two Canadian entries in men’s. Last season, Sadovsky won gold at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Slovakia, bronze at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Poland and placed sixth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final. He also placed fourth at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games and ninth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in the senior category. Sadovsky is coached by Brian Orser and Lee Barkell.

Eric Liu, 15, Edmonton, Alta., will also represent Canada in men’s. Liu placed 15th at his first ISU Junior Grand Prix this season, in St. Gervais, France. Last season he placed seventh in the junior category at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. He is coached by Ravi Walia at Ice Palace FSC.

Emily Bausback, 14, Vancouver, B.C., will be the Canadian entry in ladies. This will be her first ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment. Last season, she placed seventh in the novice category at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. She is coached by Joanne McLeod at the Champs International Skating Centre.

Marjorie Lajoie, 15, Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha, 17, Greenfield Park, Que., are one of two Canadian entries in ice dance. Last season, the 2016 Canadian junior silver medallists placed seventh at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Spain, fourth at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games, and 13th at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships. Lajoie and Lagha train in Montreal, Que., with coaches Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenauer and Pascal Denis.

Olivia Han, 14, Waterloo, Ont., and Grayson Lochhead, 16, Sweaburg, Ont., will also represent Canada in ice dance. The 2016 Canadian novice champions represent the Kitchener-Waterloo SC and Woodstock SC. Han and Lochhead are coached by Paul McIntosh.

Mike Slipchuk, Skate Canada High Performance Director, will be the Canadian team leader. Physiotherapist Paige Larson of North Vancouver, B.C., will be the Canadian medical staff onsite. Patty Klein of Mt. Royal, Que., and Susan Blatz of Burlington, Ont., are the Canadian officials at the event.

Canadian ice dancers fourth at Youth Olympic Games

LILLEHAMMER, Norway – Ice dancers Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of Greenfield Park, Que., earned Canada’s third fourth place finish in figure skating on Tuesday at the Youth Olympic Games.

Anastasia Shpilevaya and Grigory Smirnov of Russia won the gold medal with 141.88 points. Chloe Lewis and Logan Bye of the U.S. were second at 136.37 and Anastasia Skoptcova and Kirill Aleshin of Russia third at 134.62.

Lajoie and Lagha, in their fifth season together, followed at 125.87.

“It was a super fun competition,” said Lajoie, 15. “Everything was really solid for us today. I was particularly pleased with our twizzles.  But overall it went very well.”

This season they placed seventh at their first international assignment, ISU Junior Grand Prix in Spain. Earlier this year they won the silver medal at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in junior ice dance. Lajoie and Lagha train in Montreal with coaches Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenauer and Pascal Denis.

“We didn’t get the scores we wanted but what’s most important is the public and ourselves were satisfied with the performance,” said Lagha, 16. “This is our first season as juniors so we didn’t really set any precise goals except to get better at each competition.”

On Monday, Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont.,was fourth in men’s competition while Justine Brasseur of Brossard, Que., and Mathieu Ostiguy of Granby, Que., were fourth in pairs.

Two fourth place finishes for Canadian figure skaters at Youth Olympics

LILLEHAMMER, Norway – Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., came within four points of a podium finish on Monday in men’s singles figure skating action at the Youth Olympics.

Sota Yamamoto of Japan held on to first place for gold with 215.52 points followed by Deniss Vasiljevs of Latvia in second at 214.43 and Dmitri Alieb of Russia third at 209.77. Sadovsky, a double medallist this season on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit, followed at 205.69.

Sadovsky was in second spot after Saturday’s short program but a missed triple Axel in free skate which hurt his medal chances.  He had landed it for the first time in competition in Saturday’s short.

“I’m mildly disappointed not to win a medal here,’’ said Sadovksy, 16. ‘’Popping the triple Axel pretty much cost it all for me. It’s still not consistent in competition but I had been landing quite a few in practice. I just need to get more miles with it.’’

In pairs, Justine Brasseur of Brossard, Que., and Mathieu Ostiguy of Ste-Angele-de-Monnoir, Que., were also fourth with a personal best 140.59.  Ekaterina Borisova and Dmitry Sopot of Russia took the gold at 168.66.

“It went super well for us,” said Brasseur, 14, the niece of Isabelle Brasseur who won two Olympic medals in pairs with Lloyd Eisler. “It was a great experience. Our side-by-side jump and lifts were solid as well as one of our throws.”

Brasseur and Ostiguy are also tuning up for the world junior championships next month.

“We definitely reached our objectives heading into the world juniors,” said Ostiguy, 19, in his second season with Brasseur. “They were the best performances we’ve ever done together. We hit the 140 point overall and 90 point mark for the long and came within two points of getting 50 for the short.”

In ice dancing, Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of St-Hubert, Que., are fourth after Sunday’s short dance.

The free dance is on Tuesday. There are no Canadian entries in women’s competition.

Skaters ready to compete at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games

OTTAWA, ON: Canada will have three entries in the figure skating events at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway from February 12-21, 2016. The Canadian figure skating team will consist of one entry in men’s, pair and ice dance, for a total of five skaters.

Roman Sadovsky, 16, Vaughan, Ont., will be Canada’s entry in men’s. This season Sadovsky won gold at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Slovakia, bronze at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Poland and placed sixth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final. Most recently he placed ninth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in the senior men’s category. Sadovsky is coached by Tracey Wainman at the YSRA Winter Club.

Justine Brasseur, 14, Brossard, Que., and Mathieu Ostiguy, 19, Granby, Que., are the Canadian pair entry at the event. They competed on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit earlier this season placing sixth and fifth at their two assignments. In January they placed fourth in the junior category at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. Brasseur and Ostiguy train in Saint-Léonard, Que., with coach Bruno Marcotte.

Scott Rachuk of Strathroy, Ont., will be the Canadian figure skating team leader/coach and Tracey Wainman of Toronto, Ont., will be the Canadian coach in Lillehammer. Susan Blatz of Burlington, Ont., and Janice Hunter of West Vancouver, B.C., will be the Canadian officials at the event.

Silver medal for Duhamel and Radford at ISU Grand Prix Final

BARCELONA – One of the most impressive winning streaks in international figure skating is now history.

World champions Meagan Duhamel of Lively, Ont., and Eric Radford of Balmertown, Ont., won the silver medal in pairs in on Friday at the ISU Grand Prix Final.  They had strung together nine straight international victories going back to the fall of 2014.

Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov of Russia took the title with a flawless free skate earning 229.44 points. Duhamel and Radford, climbed from third after the short to the silver with a season’s best 216.67. Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov of Russia were third at 206.59.

“We were really proud, we came back fighting after struggling in the short program,” said Duhamel. “It wasn’t perfect today but it was a step in the right direction. We plan to come back strong in the second half of the season.’’

First year seniors Julianne Séguin of Longueuil, Que., and Charlie Bilodeau of Trois-Pistoles, Que., were fourth with a personal best 200.98 and showed they will be a force to reckon with in the future.

“We are happy with what we did even though we made a couple of mistakes,” said Séguin. “One of our goals was to break the 200-point barrier. It really means a lot and shows we’ve reached another level.”

In ice dancing after the short dance, defending champions Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Waterloo, Ont., are in first place with 72.75 points. Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the U.S. are second at 71.64 and Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy third at 70.14.

“We are so happy with our short dance today,” said Weaver. “We felt great this whole week and today we skated our short dance with grace and felt the energy of the Spanish fans.”

Canada has one entry in the Grand Prix Junior Final which is also being held here this week. Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., finished sixth in men’s competition.

“I definitely wanted to put out a better program,” said Sadovsky. “I sort of rushed my combinations and didn’t trust my technique today.”

Competition ends Saturday with the men’s free skate, the free dance and, for the first time, a synchronized skating final.

Canadian pairs in heated battle for medals at ISU Grand Prix Final

BARCELONA – World champions champions Meagan Duhamel of Lively, Ont., and Eric Radford of Balmertown, Ont., are in the midst of a heated battle for medals following Thursday’s pairs short program at the ISU Grand Prix Final figure skating competition.

Duhamel and Radford are sitting third at 72.74 just ahead of first year seniors Julianne Séguin of Longueuil, Que., and Charlie Bilodeau of Trois-Pistoles, Que., in fourth at 71.16. Russians are 1-2 with Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov first at 74.84 and Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov second at 73.64.

Duhamel and Radford, the defending Grand Prix Final champions, had a fall on a throw near the end of the program.

‘’It was the best short program we’ve done this season,’’ said Duhamel. ‘’But we know we are capable of more. Falling on a throw triple is uncharacteristic of us. We possibly got carried away with the moment with everything else being so good.’’

Radford says they don’t feel pressure with their impressive streak of six straight Grand Prix wins on the line.

‘’We approach every event the same,” he said. “When the music starts we bring ourselves back to the same place. That’s what we’ll do tomorrow (Friday) we know we are capable of skating a great long program.”

Séguin and Bilodeau also posted a season’s best score.

‘’We felt really great out there,’’ Séguin said. ‘’We are taking it as an experience and this gives us some confidence for the free skate.’’

In men’s competition it wasn’t a great day for three-time world champion Patrick Chan of Toronto who is sixth after the short program with 70.61 which is more than 20 points off his personal best.

‘’I messed up,’’ said Chan. ‘’I tried to add the combo on the Lutz because you never want to give up. I tried to feel the program, feel the jumps but it wasn’t successful. I just have to put that behind me and have a fresh start.’’

Canada has one entry for the Junior Grand Prix Final also taking place here. Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., is in sixth spot in men’s competition after the short program.

“I think my mind was just racing today,” said Sadovsky, 16, a gold and bronze medallist on the circuit this fall. “I’ve had a good season up till now and I wanted to put together my best skate but it didn’t happen. I felt the extra pressure and it didn’t work.”

Competition continues Friday.
