Canadians need to play catch-up at ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – Canadians teams are in sixth and seventh place after the short programs Friday at the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships but stand less than three points from the podium.

Paradise from Russia is in first place with 76.05 points, Surprise from Sweden is second at 72.83 and Marigold Ice Unity from Finland third at 72.61.

Les Suprêmes from St-Léonard, Que., are in sixth place with 70.64 and Nexxice from Burlington, Ont., the defending bronze medallists, follow in seventh at 69.91 out of 25 entries.

Nexxice and Les Suprêmes crowned national champions

OSHAWA, Ont. – Nexxice from Burlington, Ont., and Les Suprêmes from St-Léonard, Que., waged epic battles in both senior and junior competition on Saturday and each gained a title at the 2018 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships.

In senior competition, Nexxice totalled 202.72 points for its two programs followed closely by Les Suprêmes at 200.20. Nova from Brossard, Que., was third at 188.34.

“It felt really good,” said Kelly Britten of Nexxice. “We did a lot of things to stay focused on ourselves and it really helped us make the performance come alive.”

The top two senior teams will represent Canada at the 2018 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships taking place in Stockholm from April 6-7.

“We just wanted to do the same thing as in practice,” said Laurie Desilets of Les Suprêmes. “The plan was the same just to skate for us and have a lot of fun.”

Les Suprêmes hung on to top spot to win the junior title with 166.84 points, just ahead of Nexxice at 162.60. Gold Ice from Brampton, Ont., was third at 130.46.

“There’s no words, it felt just like we did in practice,” said Jessica Iacono of Les Suprêmes. “We were very in the moment and present and very together in what we were doing.”

The Nexxice group produced their best-ever score.

“We are really proud,” said Amanda Kauffman of Nexxice. “We had some adverse conditions today with the delay and we were able to regroup and refocus ourselves.”

In Intermediate competition, Meraki from Toronto won the gold medal with 111.32, Nexxice was second at 105.01 and Les Rythmiks from Repentigny, Que., third at 104.33.

“These girls have worked so hard this whole season and in particular these last two weeks,” said Meaghan Churchill of Meraki. “We put in every blood, sweat and tear we had in us today.”

More than 800 skaters from 40 teams are at the event being held at the Tribute Communities Centre.

Competition concludes Sunday with the novice and open free skates.

Nexxice synchronized skating team in France for 2018 French Cup

Canadian synchronized skating teams take home medals from 2018 international events

OTTAWA, ON:  Canada will have one team competing at the 24th annual French Cup in Rouen, France. The international synchronized skating competition takes place from February 2-4, 2018, at the Centre sportif Guy Boissière.

World bronze medallists Nexxice senior will be the sole Canadian team at the event. Last year, they placed fourth at this event. The representatives of the Burlington Skating Centre also won the gold medal at the 2017 Trophy d’Ecosse last season. The 2017 Canadian champions are coached by Shelley Simonton Barnett and Anne Schelter.

Diane Kamagianis of Mission, Ont., will be the sole Canadian official at the event.

Canadian synchronized skating teams take home medals from 2018 international events

Last week, Les Suprêmes senior and Les Suprêmes junior competed at the 2018 Mozart Cup in Salzburg, Austria. Les Suprêmes senior took home the gold medal, producing the top short program and free program, scoring 66.70 and 118.42 respectively, for a total of 185.12.

Les Suprêmes junior won the bronze medal with a short program score of 57.84 and free program score of 100.88, for a total score of 158.72.

Nexxice junior also claimed a bronze medal in international competition in Gothenburg, Sweden, last weekend. The team scored 57.98 in their short program and 94.82 in their free program at the 2018 Leon Lurje Trophy, for a total of 152.80 en route to the bronze.

In other international synchronized skating, Nova placed fourth at the 2018 Neuchâtel Trophy in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The team placed fourth in the short program with 63.33 and third in the free program, scoring 118.99, for a total of 182.32.

Canada’s Les Supremes Seniors fourth in synchro skating at Shanghai Trophy

SHANGHAI – Les Suprêmes Seniors from St-Léonard, Que., took fourth spot in the synchronized skating competition on Saturday at the Shanghai Trophy.
Team Paradise from Russia won the gold medal with 202.06 points, Team Magigold Ice Unity from Finland the silver at 191.00 and Team Surprise from Sweden the bronze at 182.97.
Les Suprêmes, third after the short program, followed at 179.53.

Les Suprêmes senior synchronized skating team in China for 2017 ISU Shanghai Trophy

OTTAWA, ON:  Canada will have one entry competing at the 2017 ISU Shanghai Trophy in Shanghai, China. Les Suprêmes senior will be the Canadian synchronized skating entry at the international invitational event taking place from November 24-26, 2017.

Last season, Les Suprêmes won the bronze medal at the 2017 Leon Lurje trophy in Sweden, the silver medal at the 2017 Canadian championships, the silver medal at the Budapest Cup and placed eighth at the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships® 2017. The representatives of CPA Saint-Léonard are coached by Marilyn Langlois, Pascal Denis and Amélie Brochu.

Karen Robertson of Chelsea, Que., will be the sole Canadian official at the event.

Canada’s Les Suprêmes win silver at Budapest Cup synchronized skating competition

BUDAPEST – Overall standings remained the same after Saturday’s long program as Les Suprêmes from St-Léonard, Que., won the silver medal at the Budapest Cup synchronized skating competition.

Team Paradise from Russia won the gold medal with 210.42 points followed by the Canadians at 188.39 and Team Passion from Hungary at 135.58.

Les Suprêmes free skate included music by Sia and represented a pursuit of a dream.

‘’We made some errors in the long program and we need to correct those to gain more ground on the Russians for the world championships,’’ said Les Suprêmes team co-captain Claudia Sforzin.  ‘’Our short program was very strong and that gave us a lot of confidence.’’

Les Suprêmes want to improve on last year’s fifth place finish at worlds.

‘’We’ve got another couple of weeks to work on the areas we need to improve,’’ said co-captain Laura Désilets. ‘’Our programs are very unified right now and it’s really the technical details we need to fine-tune.”

This season, Les Suprêmes also won the bronze medal at the 2017 Leon Lurje trophy in Sweden and the silver medal at the 2017 Canadian championships.

The representatives of CPA Saint-Léonard are coached by Marilyn Langlois, assisted by Pascal Denis and Amélie Brochu.

Skate Canada names teams for 2017 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships

CALGARY, AB: Skate Canada has selected the teams that will represent Canada at the 2017 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships and 2017 ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships.

Over the weekend, Nexxice, from the Burlington Skating Centre, and Les Suprêmes, from the CPA Saint-Léonard, earned their entries to the senior world championships, winning gold and silver respectively at 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships in Calgary, Alta.

The two senior teams will travel to Colorado Springs, USA, to compete at the 2017 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships, from April 7-8, 2017. This will be the 18th edition of the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships with Canada having won medals at 11 of those previous events.

The entries for the 2017 ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships were determined at Skate Canada Central Ontario’s annual Winterfest competition. Nexxice (junior), of the Burlington Skating Centre and Les Suprêmes (junior) from CPA Saint-Léonard earned the two entries for Canada.

Nexxice and Les Suprêmes will have home country advantage as Canada hosts the 2017 ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships for the first time. The event will be hosted in Mississauga, Ont., from March 10-11, 2017.

The ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships was a biennial event but it was recently decided at the 2016 ISU Congress that the event will become annual beginning in 2017. The inaugural event was hosted in 2013 by Helsinki, Finland. In 2015, Team Canada (Les Suprêmes) won the nation’s first medal at the championships, a bronze.

Nexxice collects third crown, Les Suprêmes triumph twice at 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships

CALGARY – Nexxice from Burlington, Ont., collected its third national title of the week on Sunday while Les Suprêmes from St-Léonard, Que., triumphed twice at the 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships.

In the senior competition, Nexxice tabulated 205.60 points with Les Suprêmes second at 190.64 and NOVA from Brossard, Que., third at 168.88.

“We went out there today, we had a job to do and we’re very proud of our performance,’’ said Nexxice team captain Kiersten Tietz.

Now Nexxice prepare for the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships April 7-8 in Colorado Springs.

“We just want to continue on the path we’re on and stay focused as a team,’’ said Tietz. “We want to use the vehicles that our coaches have given us and continue to improve.”

Les Suprêmes took the junior and novice titles.

In junior competition, Les Suprêmes won the gold medal with 170.60. Nexxice was second at 168.58 and les Pirouettes from Laval, Que., third at 146.38.

‘’We feel great,’’ said Alessia Arsenault of Les Suprêmes. ‘’We worked so hard. Our task was to do just the same things we do in practice, to skate clean and do like we always do. That’s what we did today.’’

The ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships are set for March 10-11 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

‘’We’re super excited for the world juniors,’’ said Arsenault. ‘’It’s going to be great to have the home crowd.’’

In the novice final standings, Les Suprêmes earned 109.41, les Pirouettes 108.72 and NOVA from Brossard, Que., 106.55.

On Saturday, Nexxice won the open and intermediate competitions.

Canadian juniors win gold at Leon Lurje Trophy

GOTHENBURG, Sweden – Les Suprêmes from St-Léonard, Que., won gold in junior competition on Sunday to highlight a triple medal performance for Canada at the Leon Lurje Trophy synchronized skating competititon.

Les Suprêmes, second after Saturday’s short program, won the free skate to take the gold with 152.88 points. Sunrise from Russia were second at 149.03 and Les Pirouettes from Laval, Que., were third out of 10 entries at 129.50.

In senior competition, The Rockettes from Finland stands first at 69.26, the Haydenettes from the U.S., are second at 67.02 and Les Supremes Seniors from St-Léonard, Que., are third at 59.37.

Canadian Synchronized Skating Teams in Sweden for 2017 Leon Lurje Trophy

OTTAWA, ON:  Canada will have three teams competing at the 2017 Leon Lurje Trophy in Gothenburg, Sweden. The international synchronized skating competition takes place from January 27-29, 2017, and features 26 teams from seven countries, in senior, junior, and novice. Canada will have one entry in senior and two entries in the junior category.

Canadian champions Les Suprêmes are the Canadian entry in senior. Last season, they won the silver medal at the Neuchâtel Trophy and placed fourth at the French Cup. The representatives of CPA Saint-Léonard are coached by Marilyn Langlois, assisted by Pascal Denis and Amélie Brochu.

Canadian junior silver medallists, Les Suprêmes are the first Canadian entry. Last year, the representatives of CPA Saint-Léonard won gold at the 2016 French Cup, and won the 2016 ISU Junior World Challenge Cup. Les Suprêmes junior are coached by Marilyn Langlois, assisted by Pascal Denis, Amélie Brochu, and Kassandra Patenaude.

Les Pirouettes, representing CPA Laval, will be the second Canadian entry in the junior category. Last season, they placed fifth at the 2016 Mozart Cup. The four-time consecutive Canadian junior bronze medallists are coached by Nancy Alexander and Stéphanie Savoie.

Andrew Bosco of Thorold, Ont., will be the sole Canadian official at the event.

2017 Mozart Cup Results

Last weekend, Nexxice junior began the synchro international season at the 2017 Mozart Cup. The 2016 Canadian junior champions returned from the event with the silver medal. Nexxice junior are coached by Trish Perdue-Mills and represent the Burlington Skating Centre.

Skate Canada Announces 2016-2017 National Team

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada is pleased to announce the 2016-2017 National Team. The team is comprised of 28 senior members, which includes five men, five women, four pair teams and five ice dance teams.

To be named to the National Team a skater must finish in the top five in senior singles, pair and ice dance disciplines at the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships, or be added at the discretion of the Skate Canada. These skaters may be considered to represent Canada at international competitions.

Their appointment to the national team is effective from June 1, 2016 through to April 30, 2017. Skate Canada also announced the three teams that will make up the Skate Canada Synchronized Skating National Team.
