Conrad Orzel wins the silver medal at ISU Junior Grand Prix

DRESDEN, Germany – Conrad Orzel of Woodbridge, Ont., climbed from fifth spot after the short program to win the silver medal on Friday at the seventh and final stop on the ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit.

Jun Hwan Cha of South Korea took the gold with 220.54 points, Orzel followed with a personal best 196.30 and Mitsuki Sumoto of Japan was third at 195.74. It was only Orzel’s second career international assignment.

‘’This was a breakthrough for my long program,’’ said Orzel. ‘’I’ve never really put all my elements together as I did today and I think I finally learned how too compete with all these elements in competition.’’

The 16-year-old Orzel produced a clean free skate which included a quad jump and two triple Axels in combination.

‘’The big difference to today compared to my last competition is I didn’t stress so much about my placement,’’ he said. ‘’I don’t think anyone expected me to earn a medal here but it happened because I finally showed what I’m capable of.’’

Thirteen-year-old Iliya Kovler of Richmond Hill, Ont., gained seven placings after his short program for 19th overall.

‘’It’s quite exciting to come back strong after a disappointing short program,’’ said Kovler. ‘’I was able to shake off my nervousness for the free. I’m positive I’ll bring a lot more to the rink next time and be much better.’’

Ice dancers Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of Greenfield Park, Que., finished less than point from a medal position placing fourth.

Rachel Parsons and Michael Parsons of the U.S. won the gold medal with 157.63 points. Anastasia Shpilevaya and Grigory Smirnov of Russia were second at 148.02 and their compatriots Arina Ushakova and Maxim Nekrasov were third at 140.21.

Lajoie and Lagha were third after the Thursday’s short program but couldn’t hang on finishing with a personal best 139.67 for their second fourth this season on the circuit. Alicia Fabbri of Terrebonne, Que., and Claudio Pietrantonio of Laval, Que., were sixth.
‘’It went exceptionally well for us, it’s unfortunate we couldn’t have placed higher,’’ said Lajoie, 15. ‘’It’s been a good season for us so far but there’s still a lot of work to do in order to increase our scores even more.’’

In women’s competition, Sarah Tamura of Burnaby, B.C. is sixth after the short program.

In pairs after the short program, Evelyn Walsh of London, Ont., and Trennt Michaud of Strathroy, Ont., are eighth and Justine Brasseur of Brossard, Que., and Mathieu Ostiguy of Ste-Angèle-de-Monnoir, Que., are ninth.

Competition ends Saturday with the free skates for women’s and pairs.

Canadian juniors travel to Dresden for final event of ISU Junior Grand Prix

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada will send seven entries, for a total of eleven skaters to Dresden, Germany, for the final event of the 2016-2017 ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit. Canada will send two entries per discipline in men’s, pair and ice dance, and one entry in ladies to the competition taking place from October 5-9, 2016.

Conrad Orzel, 16, Woodbridge, Ont., finished fourth in St. Gervais, France at the first event of the 2016 season, which also marked his debut on the junior circuit. Orzel also placed fourth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in the junior category, and third in the junior category of the 2016 Coupe de Printemps. He is coached by Eva Najarro and trains in Richmond Hill, Ont.

Iliya Kovler, 13, Richmond Hill, Ont., is the second Canadian entry in men’s. Kovler earned his first international medal, a bronze, at the 2016 Autumn Classic International. Last season, he placed fourth in the novice category at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. He is coached by Andrei Berezintsev in Richmond Hill, Ont.

Sarah Tamura, 15, Burnaby, B.C., will represent Canada as the lone female entry. Tamura will be competing in her second ISU Junior Grand Prix event of the season after finishing eighth in Slovenia. After capturing the 2016 Canadian junior title, Tamura earned a berth at the 2016 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, where she placed 13th. She is coached by Joanne McLeod in Burnaby, B.C.

Justine Brasseur, 15, Brossard, Que., and Mathieu Ostiguy, 19, Sainte-Angèle-de-Monnoir, Que, are one of two pairs representing Canada at the event. The pair finished eleventh at their first assignment of the season in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Last season on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit, Brasseur and Ostiguy finished sixth in Latvia and fourth in Austria. The duo from Quebec also finished fourth in junior at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships and placed seventh at the 2016 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships. Brasseur and Ostiguy train in Saint-Leonard, Que., and are coached by Richard Gauthier and Bruno Marcotte.

Evelyn Walsh, 15, London, Ont., and Trennt Michaud, 20, Strathroy, Ont., are the second Canadian pair competing in Germany. Earlier this season, the pair competed in their first Junior Grand Prix event together in Estonia and placed 11th. Walsh and Michaud are coached by Alison Purkiss and Margaret Purdy, and train in London, Ont.

Marjorie Lajoie, 15, Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha, 17, Greenfield Park, Que., are the first of two Canadian ice dance entries. They will be competing at their second ISU Junior Grand Prix event of the season, after finishing fourth at the event in Japan. Last season, Lajoie and Lagha claimed the silver medal in junior at the 2016 national championships and placed 13th at the 2016 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships. The ice dancers train in Montreal, Que., with coaches Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenauer and Pascal Denis.

Alicia Fabbri, 13, Terrebonne, Que., and Claudio Pietrantonio, 19, Laval, Que., are the second Canadian entry in ice dance. This will be their second ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment, having placed fourth in Russia earlier this season. Last season, they won silver in the novice category at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. Fabbri and Pietrantonio are coached by Julien Lalonde, Mylène Girard and Lynn McKay.

André Bourgeois, Skate Canada NextGen Director, and Nathalie Martin of Montreal, Que., will be the Canadian team leaders at the event. Dr. Erika Persson of Edmonton, Alta., and Karen Seymour of Toronto, Ont. will be the Canadian team medical staff on site. Susan Morriss of Victoria, B.C., and Sylvain Guibord of Brossard, Que., will be the Canadian officials at the event.

Canadian skaters prepared for sixth stop on ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada will send seven entries, for a total of eleven skaters to the sixth stop on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit, in Tallinn, Estonia. The event takes place from September 28-October 2, 2016, and will feature two Canadian entries per discipline in men’s, pair and ice dance, and one entry in ladies.

Roman Sadovsky, 17, Vaughan, Ont., is one of two Canadian entries in men’s. This season, he placed fifth at his ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment in Japan. Last season, Sadovsky won gold at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Slovakia, bronze at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Poland and placed sixth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final. Sadovsky is coached by Brian Orser and Lee Barkell.

Samuel Turcotte, 16, Varennes, Que., will also represent Canada in men’s. Earlier this season, he placed 11th at his first ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment in the Czech Republic. Turcotte is coached by Andree Beauchemin and represents CPA Varennes.

Emily Bausback, 14, Vancouver, B.C., will be the Canadian entry in ladies. This season, she placed 10th at her first ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment in Japan. Bausback is coached by Joanne McLeod at the Champs International Skating Centre.

Evelyn Walsh, 15, London, Ont., and Trennt Michaud, 20, Strathroy, Ont., are one of two Canadian entries in pair. This will be their first international assignment since teaming up this summer. Walsh and Michaud are coached by Alison Purkiss and Margaret Purdy at the London Competitive Skating Centre.

Hannah Dawson, 15, Johnstown, Ont., and Christian Reekie, 18, Ottawa, Ont., are the second Canadian entry in pair. This will also be their first international assignment since teaming up this summer. Dawson and Reekie are coached by Bruno Marcotte, Nicholas Young, Ian Connolly and Sylvie Fullum in Sainte-Julie, Que.

Hannah Whitley, 16, Barrie, Ont., and Elliott Graham, 18, Angus, Ont., are the first of two Canadian entries in ice dance. Earlier this season, they placed fifth at their ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment in the Czech Republic. Last season, they placed seventh at their international assignment in Latvia. Whitley and Graham are coached by David Islam and Kelly Johnson at the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie, Ont.

Irina Galiyanova, 14, Ajax, Ont., and Tommy Tang, 17, Toronto, Ont., are the second Canadian ice dance entry. This will be their first ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment. Galiyanova and Tang are coached by Carol Lane, Jon Lane and Juris Razgulajevs in Toronto, Ont.

Paige Lawrence of Kennedy, Sask., and Greg Folk of Calgary, Alta., will be the Canadian team leaders at the event. Dr. Albert Schumacher of Tecumseh, Ont., and physiotherapist Pat Stanziano of Oakville, Ont., will be the Canadian medical staff onsite. Glenn Fortin of Aurora, Ont., and Pam Chislett of Grand Prairie, Alta., will be the Canadian officials at the event.

Junior ice dancers Ashlynne Stairs and Lee Royer place fifth in Slovenia

LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA: The final day of competition at the ISU Junior Grand Prix event in Ljubljana, Slovenia finished with the women’s and the ice dance events.

Ice dancers Ashlynne Stairs, 16, Calgary, Alta. and Lee Royer, 18, St. Albert, Alta finished in fifth scoring 73.62 in the free for an overall score of 124.14

“Our performances this week were definitely a lot better than our last competition. It felt a lot stronger and we got our components higher,” said Stairs.

Americans Lorraine McNamara and Quinn Carpenter took home the gold with 148.62 points, Russians Sofia Polishchuk and Alexander Vakhnov won the silver with 144.76 points, and Anastasia Skoptcova and Kirill Aleshin also of Russia took bronze with 143.78 points.

Sarah Tamura, 15, Burnaby, B.C., finished in eighth place after scoring 89.99 in the free program for an overall score of 141.41.

“I fought through this program today, definitely was not my best but I know what to work on for my next junior grand prix in two weeks. It’s a start but I have a lot of things to work on. I am proud that I fought through it and didn’t give up,” said Tamura.

Rika Kihira of Japan took gold with 194.24 points, Marin Honda also of Japan won silver with 178.75 points and Alina Zagitova of Russia won bronze with 177.38 points.

On Friday, Joseph Phan, 15, Laval, Que., finished in fifth place in the men’s category.

Canada does not have an entry in pairs at this event.

Top-five finish for Joseph Phan at ISU Junior Grand Prix in Slovenia

LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA: Joseph Phan, 15, Laval, Que., finished in fifth place at the ISU Junior Grand Prix event in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The event was the fifth stop on the circuit. Phan was third after the short with 70.33 points. He scored 127.39 points in the free program for a total of 197.72.

“I gained a lot of experience at this competition. During my short program, I skated my all and I placed top three and I am really proud of that. During my practices I was feeling the ice and practicing well,” said Phan.

Alexei Krasnozhon of the US won gold with 211.18 points, Ilia Skirda of Russia took silver with 208.28 points and Japan’s Kazuki Tomono earned the bronze with 202.57 points.

Ice dancers Ashlynne Stairs, 16, Calgary, Alta. and Lee Royer, 18, St. Albert, Alta., are in fifth place after the short dance with 50.52 points.

Americans Lorraine McNamara and Quinn Carpenter are first with 62.60 points, Russians Anastasia Skoptcova and Kirill Aleshin are in second with 56.80 points and            Sofia Polishchuk and Alexander Vakhnov, also of Russia, are in third with 55.60 points. Ice dance will conclude tomorrow with the free dance.

On Thursday, Sarah Tamura, 15, Burnaby, B.C., skated her short program, she is in eighth place with 51.42 points.

Alina Zagitova of Russia is first with 68.09 points, Rika Kihira of Japan is second with 65.93 points and Alisa Lozko of Russia is third with 59.78 points. The ladies will skate their free program tomorrow.

Canada does not have an entry in pair at this event.

Canadian junior skaters head to Ljubljana for fifth event of ISU Junior Grand Prix

Ottawa, ON: Skate Canada will send three entries, for a total of four skaters to Ljubljana, Slovenia for the fifth event of the 2016-2017 ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit. Canada will send one entry per discipline in ladies, men’s and ice dance to the competition taking place from September 21-25, 2016.

Joseph Phan, 15, Laval, Que., the 2016 Canadian Junior Champion will be participating in only his second junior grand prix event in Ljubljana. Phan finished sixth at his first competition in Ostrava, Czech Republic, earlier this month. Last season, he won the silver medal in the junior category at the 2015 Autumn Classic International. He is coached by Yvan Desjadrins at the Club de Patinage Artistique Laval.

Sarah Tamura, 15, Burnaby, B.C., will be Canada’s lone female entry at the junior grand prix event in Ljubljana. Tamura will aim to build off a successful 2016 season where she captured the Canadian junior title. That performance helped earn her a berth at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Debrecen, Hungary where she placed 13th. Tamura also placed 13th at the 2015 Junior Grand Prix in Latvia. She is coached by Joanne McLeod at the Champs International Skating Centre in Burnaby, B.C.

Ashlynne Stairs, 16, Calgary, Alta. and Lee Royer, 18, St. Albert, Alta., will be representing Canada in the ice dance discipline. The duo finished seventh at the first stop on the 2016 ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit, in France. Stairs and Royer are coached by Megan Wing and Aaron Lowe at the Champs International Skating Centre in Burnaby, B.C.

Manon Perron of Boucherville, Que. will act as the Canadian team lead at the event in Slovenia, and she will be accompanied by physiotherapist Siobhan Karam of Ottawa, Ont. Also attending the event are Canadian officials Debbie Islam of Barrie, Ont., and Sabrina Wong of Toronto, Ont.

Canadian pairs climb to fourth at ISU Junior Grand Prix

SARANSK, Russia – Lori-Ann Matte and Thierry Ferland of Lévis, Que., climbed to a fourth place finish in pairs on Friday at the fourth stop on the ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit.

Russians swept the podium with Anastasia Mishina and Vladislav Mirzoev first with 175.82 points. Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii were second at 152.57 and Ekaterina Borisov and Dmitry Sopot of Russia third at 150.76.

Matte and Ferland were fifth after the short program on Thursday but produced ghe fourth best free skate of the day to make a move in the final ranking. They were sixth at the second stop in Ostrava, the Czech Republic.

Jamie Knoblauch of Milton, Ont., and Cody Wong of Cambridge, Ont., were 10th.

There was another Russian victory in men’s competition as Alexander Samarin took the gold. Andrew Torgashev of the U.S. was second and Matyas Belohradsky of the Czech Republic was third.

Edrian Paul Celestino of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que., also made an impressive climb up the standings going from 12th after the short program to ninth overall.

‘’After the long I’m very satisfied with how I performed,’’ said Celestino, 18. ‘’There were things I could improve but with the way came back in this long program I’m happy with myself. It’s a learning experience and I want to improve from now on.’’

In the short dance, Alicia Fabbri of Terrebonne, Que., and Claudio Pietrantonio of Laval, Que., stand seventh.
The free dance is on Saturday. Canada has no entries in women’s competition.

ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit continues as Team Canada heads to Russia

OTTAWA, ON: Canada will have four entries, for a total of seven skaters at the fourth ISU Junior Grand Prix of the season, taking place in Saransk, Russia. Canada will have one entry per discipline in men’s and ice dance and two entries in pair at the event which takes place from September 14-18, 2016.
Canadian junior silver medallist Edrian Paul Celestino, 18, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que., will represent Canada in men’s. Last season, he placed 13th at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Austria and fourth at the Autumn Classic International. The representative of Saint Laurent FSC is coached by Daniel Beland at the Dollard Civic Centre.

Lori-Ann Matte, 17, Lévis, Que., and Thierry Ferland, 19, Lévis, Que., are one of two Canadian pair entries at the event. Earlier this season, they placed sixth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in the Czech Republic. Last season, they placed sixth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in the junior category. Matte and Ferland are coached by Martine Simard and represent CPA St. Romuald – St. Jean.

Canadian novice pair champions Jamie Knoblauch, 14, Milton, Ont., and Cody Wong, 21, Cambridge, Ont., are the second Canadian pair entry at the event. This will be their first ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment. Knoblauch and Wong are coached by Kevin Wheeler and Laurence Collin-Knoblauch and represent Champs International SC and Preston FSC.

Canadian ice dancers fourth at ISU Junior Grand Prix

YOKOHAMA, Japan – Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of Greenfield Park, Que., took fourth spot in ice dancing on Sunday to conclude the third stop on the ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit.

Rachel Parsons and Michael Parsons of the U.S. took the gold with 160.42 points, Anastasia Shpilevaya and Grigory Smirnov of Russia were second at 151.50 and Angelique Abachkina and Louis Thauron of France third at 148.76

Lajoie and Lagha, world junior team members last season, followed at 137.14, their best-ever international score.

“Both programs went very well,’’ said Lajoie. “We are happy with our result and fell we are on the right track.’’

Olivia Han of Waterloo, Ont., and Grayson Lochhead of Sweaburg, Ont., were eighth.

Japan swept the podium in women’s competition: Kaori Sakamoto took the gold, Marin Honda the silver and Mako Yamashita the bronze.

Fourteen-year-old Emily Bausback of Vancouver produced the eighth best free skate to climb from 13th after the short program to 10th overall in her Junior Grand Prix debut.

On Saturday, Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., landed his first career quadruple jump on international ice and was fifth. Eric Liu of Edmonton was 14th.

The fourth stop on the circuit is this upcoming weekend in Saranks, Russia.

Roman Sadovsky lands quad jump, places fifth at ISU Junior Grand Prix

YOKOHAMA, Japan – Roman Sadovksy of Vaughan, Ont., landed a quadruple jump for the first time on international ice and took fifth spot on Saturday in men’s competition at the third stop on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit in figure skating.

Juan Hwan Cha of South Korea was the winner with 239.47 points. Vincent Zhou of the U.S. was second at 226.39 and Alexey Erokhov of Russia third at 216.91. Sadovsky, fourth after the short program, finished with 211.56.

‘’I’m pretty happy with my free skate,’’ said Sadovsky, a double medallist last year on the circuit. ‘’Getting that quad jump was definitely a step up for me. For me to move up in the standings I need to land the triple Axel and I also hope to another one in the program as well. Little disappointed I missed it here today.’’

In ice dancing, Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of Greenfield Park, Que., are in fourth place after the short program just under four points from the podium position. Olivia Han of Waterloo, Ont., and Grayson Lochhead of Sweaburg, Ont., are eighth.

In Friday’s women’s short program 14-year-old Emily Bausback of Vancouver stands 13th in her junior Grand Prix debut.

Competition ends Sunday with the free dance and women’s free skate.

Canadian skaters continue on ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit in Japan

OTTAWA, ON: Canada will have five entries, for a total of seven skaters at the third ISU Junior Grand Prix of the season. The event takes place in Yokohama, Japan, from September 7-11, 2016. Canada will have one entry in ladies and two entries in men’s and ice dance. There will be no pair competition at the event.

Roman Sadovsky, 17, Vaughan, Ont., is one of two Canadian entries in men’s. Last season, Sadovsky won gold at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Slovakia, bronze at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Poland and placed sixth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final. He also placed fourth at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games and ninth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in the senior category. Sadovsky is coached by Brian Orser and Lee Barkell.

Eric Liu, 15, Edmonton, Alta., will also represent Canada in men’s. Liu placed 15th at his first ISU Junior Grand Prix this season, in St. Gervais, France. Last season he placed seventh in the junior category at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. He is coached by Ravi Walia at Ice Palace FSC.

Emily Bausback, 14, Vancouver, B.C., will be the Canadian entry in ladies. This will be her first ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment. Last season, she placed seventh in the novice category at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. She is coached by Joanne McLeod at the Champs International Skating Centre.

Marjorie Lajoie, 15, Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha, 17, Greenfield Park, Que., are one of two Canadian entries in ice dance. Last season, the 2016 Canadian junior silver medallists placed seventh at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Spain, fourth at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games, and 13th at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships. Lajoie and Lagha train in Montreal, Que., with coaches Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenauer and Pascal Denis.

Olivia Han, 14, Waterloo, Ont., and Grayson Lochhead, 16, Sweaburg, Ont., will also represent Canada in ice dance. The 2016 Canadian novice champions represent the Kitchener-Waterloo SC and Woodstock SC. Han and Lochhead are coached by Paul McIntosh.

Mike Slipchuk, Skate Canada High Performance Director, will be the Canadian team leader. Physiotherapist Paige Larson of North Vancouver, B.C., will be the Canadian medical staff onsite. Patty Klein of Mt. Royal, Que., and Susan Blatz of Burlington, Ont., are the Canadian officials at the event.

Joseph Phan sixth in ISU Junior Grand Prix debut

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic – Canadian junior champion Joseph Phan of Laval, Que., completed his first ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating competition is sixth place in men’s singles on Saturday at the second stop on the circuit.

Dmitri Aliev of Russia won the gold medal with 232.83 points, Alexei Krasnozhon of the U.S. was second in 223.60 and Roman Savosin of Russia third in 207.64.

Phan, 15, was sixth both the short and long programs and totalled 189.78. Samuel Turcotte of Varennes, Que., also in his Junior Grand Prix debut, was 11th.

‘’I tried to do like at home in practice and I think I achieved that,’’ said Phan. ‘’it was quite an experience being here and I felt proud to be skating amongst this kind of talent. It makes you want to go back home and work harder.’’

Turcotte,16, is also headed home satisfied.

‘’I felt the experience here was very valuable,’’ said Turcotte. ‘’I was really pleased how we prepared for this competition. I felt very ready.’’

Russia won two more medals in women’s competition with Anastasiia Gubanova earning gold and Alisa Lozko the bronze. Rika Kihira of Japan was second.

Alicia Pineault of Varennes took 10th spot in her debut on the circuit.

The third stop on the Junior Grand Prix is this Friday and Saturday Yokohama, Japan.
