Jamie Salé and David Pelletier to serve as Athlete Ambassadors for 2017 Skate Canada International

OTTAWA, ON: Olympic Champions Jamie Salé and David Pelletier, one of the most decorated pair teams in Canadian figure skating history will serve as Athlete Ambassadors during the 2017 Skate Canada International. The event will take place in Regina, Saskatchewan, from October 26-29, 2017, at the Brandt Centre.

“I am thrilled to be co-ambassador with my partner David Pelletier for this years’ Skate Canada! I look forward to being a part of the skating family again and seeing some wonderful competition,” expressed Salé.

“We are very honoured to be back at Skate Canada International as athlete ambassadors. It is a competition we grew up watching and has a great history of fantastic skating. It is also where Jamie and I debuted as a team on the international circuit. We are very excited to be watching the best skaters in the world getting ready for their Olympic journey,” added Pelletier.

In their role of Athlete Ambassadors, Salé and Pelletier will handle speaking engagements and media interviews, conduct appearances on behalf of the competing athletes and, of course, make time for their legion of fans.

“We are thrilled to have Jamie and David back at a Skate Canada event and thank them for making time to represent the athletes during this important season. They know firsthand the pressures of competition, and by using their experiences they will help us create an exciting event for all participants,” said Debra Armstrong, CEO, Skate Canada.

Salé and Pelletier’s outstanding career was highlighted by their gold-medal performance at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. The pair officially started competing together in 1998, placing third at Skate Canada International before going on to win the event in 2000 and 2001. In 2001 they claimed their first and only world championship in Vancouver. Salé and Pelletier were officially inducted into the Skate Canada Hall of Fame in 2008, and the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame the following year.

Soucisse and Firus near podium at Finlandia Open

ESPOO, Finland – Carolane Soucisse of Chateauguay, Que., and Shane Firus of North Vancouver took fourth spot in ice dancing on Sunday to conclude the Finlandia Open figure skating competition. The event was the sixth stop on the ISU Challenger Series circuit.

Two-time world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guilaume Cizeron of France won the gold at 188.25, Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin of Russia were second at 166.88 and Laurence Fournier-Beaudry and Nikolay Sorensen of Denmark were third at 158.21.

Soucisse and Firus were also fourth after the short dance and totalled 154.60. The result was one placing higher than at the season opening Challenger Series event last month in Salt Lake City.

‘’For the short dance we were pretty solid and happy about the scores,’’ said Soucisse. ‘’In the free dance we had a couple of stumbles but at the end of the day we were pleased with what we accomplished.’’

The couple felt they improved since Salt Lake.

‘’We focused more on good levels and just skating bigger,’’ added Firus. ‘’We showed a lot of good energy as well which is really awesome.’’

In women’s competition, Maria Sotskova of Russia won the gold medal with 205.30 points. Carolina Kostner of Italy was second at 193.76 and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia third at 189.13.

Gabrielle Daleman of Newmarket, Ont., the world championship bronze medallist, placed sixth at 174.83. She was fifth after the short program and produced the seventh best free skate.

She opened with a triple-triple combination and also landed a triple-double-double and double Axel. Two falls near the end hurt her overall result.

‘’It wasn’t my best but overall definitely a step in the right direction,’’ said Daleman. ‘’Both programs this year are much harder skating skill wise. There’s more choreography and difficulty. There was a lot of good stuff but also a lot I need to go home and work on.’’

Lajoie and Lagha triumph at ISU Junior Grand Prix

ZAGREB, Croatia – Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of Greenfield Park, Que., staved off two Russian couples to win the gold medal Saturday in ice dancing at the fifth stop on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit.

The Canadians bettered their score from their sixth place finish at the world juniors last year with 150.30 points. Sofia Shevchenko and Igor Eremenko of Russia were second at 145.05 and their compatriots Ksenia Konkina and Grigory Yakushev were third at 143.77.

‘’We just had a super experience overall this week,’’ said Lajoie. ‘’Everything from the practices to the performances went very well.’’

It was a first victory and third medal in five junior Grand Prix career appearances for Lajoie and Lagha. They won silver at the season opening event in Australia and are now qualified for the Grand Prix Final in December.

‘’Our plan here was just to skate for ourselves and not focus on the results,’’ added Lagha. ‘’We went out there to have fun and that’s what worked. For the lead up to the Final our focus will be on the technical aspects and bringing the program to another level.’’

Ellie Fisher of Lower Coverdale, N.B., and Simon-Pierre Mallette-Paque of Laval, Que., moved from sixth after the short dance to fifth.

‘’It’s a satisfying result but not exactly what we wanted,’’ said Mallette-Paque. ‘’We will continue to build on that.’’

It was a first international experience for the couple.

‘Representing Canada was pretty cool,’’ said Fisher.

It was Canada’s second medal of the competition. On Friday Joseph Phan of Laval, Que., took the silver in men’s competition.
