ISU announces line-up for Grand Prix events

OTTAWA, ON: The International Skating Union (ISU) has announced the line-ups for the six 2016 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events. Canada will host the second stop on the circuit, the 2016 Skate Canada International in Mississauga, Ont., from October 27-30, 2016 at the Hershey Centre.

The line-up in Mississauga features Canadian favourites including Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, Patrick Chan, and Alaine Chartrand. Fans will also get to witness the homecoming of Olympic ice dance champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir; they will make their return to competition after taking a two-year hiatus.

They will be joined by various current and former world champions including Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia, Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia, and Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy.

“The line-up for Skate Canada International in Mississauga this year could not be any stronger. The deck is stacked with world and Olympic medallists and we are excited to be bringing such a competitive event to the Hershey Centre,” said Dan Thompson, CEO, Skate Canada.

Skate Canada International is the second competition in the annual series. The other events take place in the United States (Skate America), Russia (Rostelecom Cup), France (Trophée Eric Bompard), China (Cup of China) and Japan (NHK Trophy).

Each skater/team can be assigned a maximum of two events. Skaters are awarded points based on their placements at their events. The top six from each discipline (men’s, ladies, pair and ice dance) qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final to be held in Marseille, France from December 8-11, 2016.

Skate Canada announces bid to host the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final ® 2018

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada has announced that it will make a formal bid to host the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final ® 2018. If successful, this will be Canada’s third time hosting the championships; Canada previously hosted the event in 2011 in Quebec City, Que., and in 2001 in Kitchener, Ont.

The ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final ® is the pinnacle event of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. The senior series hosts six stops: United States (Skate America), Canada (Skate Canada International), China (Cup of China), France (Trophée Eric Bompard), Russia (Rostelecom Cup) and Japan (NHK Trophy). Skaters are awarded points based on their placements at their assigned events. The top six with the most points at the end of the series, in each of the four disciplines, advance to the Final. Junior skaters qualify through a similar process; they are awarded points based on their placement from the seven ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating events.

This event is the most prestigious event in the first half of the skating calendar; we can expect the competition to be extremely competitive,” said Dan Thompson, CEO, Skate Canada. “We are looking forward to partnering with a great host to deliver this world-class event.”

Skate Canada is requesting host city proposals for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final ® 2018. Skate Canada is focused on acquiring a host city with strong partners across all aspects of the event that will work with Skate Canada to deliver an outstanding event and inspire Canadians to embrace the joy of skating. Potential candidate cities can find the official RFP information here. A Canadian host city bid will be selected in November 2016.

In accordance with ISU regulations, Skate Canada will submit a host city along with supporting documents in December 2016. The 2018 host will be determined by the ISU Council.

Earlier this week, Skate Canada also announced its intention to host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships ® 2020. Skate Canada is currently searching for a host city through the RPF process. Potential candidate cities can find the official RFP information here.

Canadians Bring Home 18 Medals from the International Adult Figure Skating Competition

OTTAWA, ONT: Canada’s adult figure skaters made an impressive showing at this year’s International Adult Figure Skating Competition, winning a total of 18 medals. The annual event was held in Oberstdorf, Germany, from June 13-18, 2016.

This year’s competition attracted over 500 skaters from 32 countries plus five synchro teams. Skaters competed in Free Skating, Artistic Free Skating, Pairs Free Skating, Pairs Artistic Free Skating, Ice Dance (Pattern Dance, Short Dance and Free Dance) and Synchronized Skating.

A notable highlight from the event was the performance of Gary Beacom from B.C., who captured two gold medals and earned 99.73 points in the Masters Elite Men III Free Skating category; the highest score ever awarded in this competition since it began in 2005.

Skate Canada announces bid to host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships ® 2020

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada will formally submit a bid in April of 2017 to host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships ® 2020. The International Skating Union (ISU) has confirmed the receipt of Skate Canada’s intent to bid and if successful this will be Canada’s 11th time hosting the championships. Canada last hosted the event in 2013 in London, Ont.

The ISU World Figure Skating Championships ® is an annual event that moves around the globe, attracting more than 150 million television viewers worldwide and showcasing the 200 best athletes from 50 countries in four disciplines: men’s, ladies, pair and ice dance.

“We are thrilled to be in the running to host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships ® 2020. Canada has a strong hosting history and we would be honoured to hold the 2020 event,” said Dan Thompson, CEO, Skate Canada. “We are proud to have held the world championships 10 times previously and we know that if the ISU brings this event back to Canada we will continue our outstanding hosting record while inspiring not only Canadians to embrace the joy of skating, but people around the world.”

Twenty-three Canadians to compete at the 2016 International Adult Figure Skating Competition in Germany

OTTAWA, ON: Twenty-three Canadian adult skaters will be competing at the International Adult Figure Skating Competition being held in Oberstdorf, Germany from June 13-18, 2016.

This year’s competition has once again attracted record numbers, more than 500 adult skaters from 32 countries. In order to compete at the International Adult Figure Skating Competition, skaters must be between the ages of 28 and 78.

“We are so proud that Canada has a healthy, active community of adult figure skaters,” said Leanna Caron, President, Skate Canada.  “Each year, we have a strong contingent of skaters who compete in this prestigious international adult competition, and they have done us very proud, bringing home many medals since this competition began in 2005.”

Skate Canada Announces 2016-2017 National Team

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada is pleased to announce the 2016-2017 National Team. The team is comprised of 28 senior members, which includes five men, five women, four pair teams and five ice dance teams.

To be named to the National Team a skater must finish in the top five in senior singles, pair and ice dance disciplines at the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships, or be added at the discretion of the Skate Canada. These skaters may be considered to represent Canada at international competitions.

Their appointment to the national team is effective from June 1, 2016 through to April 30, 2017. Skate Canada also announced the three teams that will make up the Skate Canada Synchronized Skating National Team.

Canadians Benoît Lavoie & Nathalie Lambert both successfully elected to ISU positions

DUBROVNIK, CROATIA: Skate Canada and Speed Skating Canada are thrilled to announce that Canadians Benoît Lavoie and Nathalie Lambert have both been elected individually to positions at the International Skating Union (ISU) following elections which took place Friday, June 10th, at the 56th ISU Congress in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Lavoie has been elected to a seat on the ISU Council and Lambert was elected to the Chair of the Short Track Speed Skating Technical Committee.

Benoît Lavoie is a former President of Skate Canada and currently sits on the Skate Canada Board of Directors. Lavoie has been a volunteer for over 30 years, and he has held many roles in his career including competitor, world judge, referee, and technical controller.

“I have always believed that when you are passionate about something you need to be prepared to step forward to be a part of the organization. I believe in the ISU and I am proud to now be working towards its continued revitalization,” said Benoît Lavoie, ISU Council Member. “I thank my many mentors and the entire Skate Canada organization for believing in me and providing invaluable support over the years.”

“We are thrilled to have Benoît elected to the ISU Council. His passion for skating, deep and broad set of experiences and skills will serve all ISU members, large, small, and developing, extremely well. The ISU is fortunate to gain such a passionate sport leader,” stated Leanna Caron, President, Skate Canada.

Nathalie Lambert, three-time Olympic medallist in short track speed skating, including gold in the women’s relay at the 1992 Games, will now be the chair of the ISU Short Track Technical Committee after being a member of this committee since 2010. She has become the first-ever woman to be elected as a chair in one of the ISU speed skating technical committees.

“I’m really proud and happy to have the privilege of leading the Short Track Technical Committee,” said Lambert. “I’m also proud about being the first woman to lead a speed skating committee, and I’m also very happy to see another woman being part of the Speed Skating Council, Yang Yang from China.”

“I’m glad that Nathalie Lambert was elected as the chair of the ISU Short Track Technical Committee,” added Speed Skating Canada’s Interim President, Susan Auch. “Her experience as an athlete, coach and member of the technical committee speaks for itself. Nathalie makes history today as the first woman chair person for a speed skating technical committee, along with Chinese Olympic medallist Yang Yang who is the first woman elected to the ISU Speed Skating Council.”

“It was also a great day for Canada when Benoît Lavoie was voted in as ISU Figure Skating Council Member. On behalf of Speed Skating Canada’s community, congratulations to Nathalie Lambert and Benoît Lavoie.”

Skate Canada and Speed Skating Canada would also like to congratulate Jan Dijkema, the new ISU President succeeding to Ottavio Cinquanta who was president since 1994, as well as Alexander Lakernik, the new ISU Vice President Figure Skating, and Tron Espeli, the new ISU Vice President Speed Skating.

OTTAWA, ON: This past weekend, Skate Canada recognized 21 award winners during its annual Achievement Awards Gala, part of the 2016 Skate Canada Ice Summit in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The winners received their awards on Friday night at the annual Skate Canada Achievement Awards Gala and Banquet.
