Signal Hill

Signal Hill

We are delighted you will be joining us in St. John’s – City of Legends! Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador is Having a Time to celebrate your arrival and to welcome you to our province! Our Kick-Off Kitchen Party will begin with a motor-coach tour to Cape Spear and Signal Hill and Quidi Vidi where between the jigs and the reels, we’ll enjoy a scoff and a nip!

Our first stop along the way will be Cape Spear which at 52°37’W is North America’s most easterly point of land. Cape Spear offers a sweeping view of the Atlantic Ocean, is a prime viewing site for whales and icebergs, home to the oldest surviving lighthouse in North America and the remnants of Fort Cape Spear!

Cape Spear Lighthouse built in 1838 is a designated National Historic Site. The original lighthouse building and the light keeper’s residence have since been restored to the period of 1839.

While at Cape Spear you may also visit the remnants of Fort Cape Spear, which was built to protect the entrance to St. John’s Harbour and served as lookout base for Canadian and American Forces monitoring naval threats on the convoy route between Europe and North America during World War II.

From Cape Spear we will travel to Signal Hill National Historic Site and home to St. John’s Harbour defences from the 17th century to World War II. It is also where Gugielmo Marconi received the world’s first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901. Overlooking both the Atlantic Ocean and the city, Signal Hill is St. John’s most popular landmark and another prime whale and iceberg viewing location.

Our final destination is the picturesque historic fishing village of Quidi Vidi. Upon arrival in Quid Vidi you may stroll around the village at your leisure, until you are ready to join us at the Quidi Vidi Brewing Company (QVBC) where you will be treated to a scoff of traditional finger foods and a few nips of QVBC product, brewed using 25, 000-year-old iceberg water, enjoy a couple of jigs, reels, and scuffs to the sounds of live music and a few surprises!

We suggest you bring along a jacket/fleece, camera and your dancing shoes!

Tickets must be purchased by 16:30 ET, Friday, May 13, 2016.

The Ice Den (8:30-9:30)

Based on the popular TV show, The Dragon’s Den, Skate Canada will be hosting The Ice Den, an innovation and idea generating session at this year’s conference. This will be a fun, collaborative session where participants will creatively pitch their idea to a panel who will then decide whether or not to support that idea and help bring it to fruition.

If you think you have a great idea that needs to be heard and that can make skating and our organization better, apply today for the chance to make a pitch to the panel of IceBreakers to make your idea a reality!

We are now two years into the strategic plan that was created for this quadrennial. Skate Canada CEO Dan Thompson and the senior leadership team will host an interactive discussion on the status of the objectives in the strategic plan and you will have the opportunity to participate, discuss and ask questions as we evaluate our progress in moving the organization closer to achieving our goals.

Notice of AGM

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is an opportunity for Members of Skate Canada to participate in discussions surrounding rule amendments and to direct questions to appropriate stakeholders within the organization. The AGM also provides Members with the opportunity to participate in Skate Canada’s decision-making process by voting in the elections for the Skate Canada Board of Directors.

To ensure the highest level of participation, Skate Canada will live-stream the AGM on the Internet. Members who have registered to attend the AGM remotely and have identified that they will be voting will be able to participate in the meeting and cast their votes via the Internet. More information on how to register to attend the meeting and on how to cast your vote electronically will follow.

Coaches are reminded that recent changes to Skate Canada’s bylaws now provide all Skate Canada Certified Professional Coaches with the right to vote during the AGM.

“Rally in the Alley” by McCarthy’s Party*

Time: 18:30 – 23:00

Location: Meet at Avalon Ballroom, Delta St. John’s Hotel and Conference Centre, then on to George Street!

Fee: $85.00

George Street, St. John
St. John’s has more bars and pubs per capita than any other city in Canada and most of them are located on the renowned George Street. This evening you will have the opportunity to experience the famous nightlife of downtown St. John’s. Meeting in the Avalon Ballroom at the hotel at 18:30, you will receive a coloured bandana which will indicate the musician (bagpipers, drummers, fifers, etc.) that you will follow for the rest of the evening.

You will then march to O’Reilly’s for a traditional fish ’n chips dinner while you experience some great Newfoundland entertainment. Then, led by your musician, you’re off on a pub crawl to three different venues with interactive entertainment, live music and sing-a-longs, an Irish step dancing lesson from local dancers and a Newfoundland Screech-In! To finish off the event the entire group will meet up at a venue with a live dance band.

The price includes your traditional fish n’ chips dinner, entrance to all pubs, four beverage tickets, Screech-In ceremony, custom “Rally in the Alley” bandana, McCarthy’s attendants, entertainment at all pubs and live band at the final venue. This will be an experience that you do not want to miss!

Please note children can only attend the dinner portion of the evening due to Newfoundland Liquor Corporation Laws.

Tickets must be purchased by 16:30 ET, Friday, May 13, 2016.
