ESPOO, Finland – Three-time world champion Patrick Chan of Toronto is in third place after Saturday’s short program in men’s competition at the Finlandia Trophy.
Maxim Kovtun of Russia is first at 88.26, Nathan Chen of the U.S. second at 87.50 and Chan follows at 84.59.

‘’Not a great skate,’’ said Chan, about his season debut. ‘’But the reason I came here was to get comfortable skating in an international event again. There ‘s a lot of new things happening and the energy on the ice before the program was all different for me.’’

The men’s free skate is on Sunday.
